The Sunshine Coast Bicycle User Group (SCBUG) launches its first campaign for road safety.
SCBUG Safety Committee is proud to announce the launch of its ‘CAMERA ON BOARD’ campaign.
There are many safety issues facing all those who share Sunshine Coast roads, particularly those most vulnerable. The SCBUG thinks that the use of video cameras by cyclists, and the awareness of the use of cameras by motorists could have the most impact on the behaviour of both.
Jon Rogers from the Sunshine Coast Bicycle User Group (SCBUG) says, ‘We know that badly behaved cyclists make motorists angry. We also know that angry motorists are a safety risk for cyclists. Our campaign seeks to improve the behaviour of both’.
Cameras, whether dash mounted in a car, or mounted on the front and rear of a bicycle, hold both driver and rider to account for their behaviour. You certainly can’t make an insurance claim, defend a traffic prosecution or report a close pass unless you yourself are doing the right thing and complying with the law.
‘Just because it’s legal to cycle two-abreast, doesn’t mean we should be doing it in all situations for example’, says Jon.

The campaign, which will run for the next 4 weeks, will urge more cyclists to purchase and ride with cameras, and to comply with the law. It will also seek to help motorists understand that it is dangerous, as well as illegal to pass a cyclist within 1 meter in a 60kph zone, and 1.5 meters in speed zones greater than 60kph.
The campaign will be communicated widely among cycling and active transport groups, clubs and organisations as well as publicly. Cyclists will be encouraged to report more incidents and to use a wider variety of avenues to create awareness that when there is a cyclist on the road, he or she is likely to be filming.
SCBUG encourages everyone in our Sunshine Coast community to keep considering the small actions we make while driving or riding, and to remember that safer roads are everyone’s responsibility.
