The SCBUG Safety Committee is proud to announce the launch of its ‘CAMERA ON BOARD’ campaign.

THINGS WE SHOULD KNOW:

  • Nearly every cyclist on the Sunshine Coast, at some point, rides on the road.

  • Poor cyclist behaviour makes motorists angry.

  • Angry motorists are a safety risk for cyclists.

  • 99.9% of cyclists have at some time experienced a close pass, or other forms of safety risk or abuse while riding on local roads^.

  • There has been a 33% increase in incidents involving cyclists and motor vehicles on the Sunshine Coast^.

  • Cameras mounted on the front and rear of a bicycle monitor cyclist and motorist behaviour.

  • Nearly 80% of cyclists currently DO NOT ride with any cameras*.

  • Many cyclists and motorists are not familiar with the law.

  • Only 21% of cyclists report incidents.

  • Reporting incidents WITHOUT photographic or video evidence is mostly futile.

  • It is also futile to report an incident unless YOU are doing the right thing.

Notes:

We think that the use of cameras by cyclists, and the awareness of the use of cameras by motorists, could have the most impact on the behaviour of both.

HERE’S WHAT WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE:

  1. More cyclists riding with cameras

  2. A greater awareness among motorists that cyclists ride with cameras

  3. Better understanding of the law and why the laws exist

  4. More reporting of unsafe and dangerous incidents

  5. Better behaviour by cyclists and motorists

We hope to achieve these things by doing the following:

  • help cyclists overcome barriers hindering the purchase of suitable cameras

  • inform road users and cyclists of the law and why it exists

  • inform and promote responsibility for actions that make our roads safer

  • educate cyclists on how to report safety incidents and issues

  • provide other avenues for the creation of awareness among the wider community

Have you asked yourself?

Bike Glyph

Cyclists

Are you part of the 80% NOT riding with cameras?
Have you thought about why you don’t?

What stops you from purchasing them?

If you have cameras, do you report incidents?  If not, why not?

Do you think about how your behaviour while riding effects motorists?

Car glyph

Motorists

Are you aware that cyclists ride with cameras?

Do you know what the law is regarding the distance you must give cyclists when passing?

Do you know why the law exists?

Do you consider the vulnerability of other road users when you are driving?

Our campaign helps answer most of these questions. Here’s how *

*The links below will be made live as each element of the campaign is released.

Cameras

Camera Options

  • List of available and affordable camers

  • Cameras suitable for reporting incidents

The Law

  • Details of the ‘A Metre Matters’ law

  • Amy’s Foundation road safety video

Police Reporting

  • How to report an incident to Police

  • The use of UpRide to post videos

How long will the campain last?

4 weeks in total.  Each element released every week beginning in March 2026. The entire campaign, associated information and resources will remain on this site in perpetuity following the end of the campaign.

Who will receive the message?

The campaign will be widely communicated to local cycling clubs, organisations and groups, and via press release to the wider community.

Please join us to engage with the campaign.  Click on the links above.  Consider purchasing cameras and take them on EVERY ride.

DO THE RIGHT THING…ride like you are driving the vehicle behind you.  Drive like you are the cyclist in front.  Report unsafe behaviour and incidents.

Safe sharing of roads is the responsibility of us all.
