HOW TO REPORT A CLOSE PASS IN QLD

A close pass is when a driver overtakes someone riding a bike without leaving the legal minimum distance. Drivers must leave at least 1 metre in 60 km/h or lower zones, and 1.5 metres in higher speed zones. You can report a close pass through the Queensland Police online system.

Video and non-video reports

  • Video is needed for Police to take enforcement action because it provides clear evidence of the pass and the registration.

  • Reports without video are still accepted. These help Police identify unsafe behaviour, hotspot locations, and repeat vehicles, even though they cannot usually lead to prosecution.

  • Both types of reports add value and support safer roads. For Police to take enforcement action, you must be willing to provide a statement and attend court if required.

What you need

  • Provide as much detail as you can, because it helps Police assess the incident and identify the vehicle. Include the location, time, registration, description of the pass, and any footage or screenshots that you have.

  • If you do not know every detail, such as the exact vehicle model, that is okay. Give the information you have and keep it simple and factual.

How to report

Go to https://forms.police.qld.gov.au/launch/Hooning and select “Make a cyclist complaint”.

  • Enter the location, the date and time, and any witness details.

  • State what you were doing at the time, for example riding in a bike lane or in the traffic lane and confirm whether any injuries or property damage occurred.

  • Add the vehicle details and describe the close pass clearly and factually. Include the speed limit if you know it.

  • Add your contact details if you want Police to follow up, then submit the report.

Footage and evidence

  • Police prefer unedited footage because it shows the full context of the incident.

  • If you trim the clip, keep a copy of the original file in case Police request it later.

  • Include a few seconds before and after the close pass so the lead-up and driver behaviour are clear.

  • Screenshots are helpful, especially if they show the registration plate and your position on the road. Upload all files in one session when you receive the secure link.

Upload your video

  • After you submit the form, you will receive a secure upload link by SMS or email.

  • Use this link to upload your footage and screenshots in one session.

  • The link expires in ten days, so upload as soon as you can. Keep a copy of the original file in case Police need it later.
