E-Bike Laws: Government Challenged on Evidence, Consultation and Damage to Tourism

At a public meeting in Peregian on 20 October, Queensland Police reported significant success in tackling illegal electric motorbikes — achievements strongly welcomed by the Sunshine Coast Bicycle User Group (SCBUG).

But Police Minister Dan Purdie failed to provide evidence justifying restrictions on law-abiding e-bike riders, while local tourism operators described lost customers and substantial financial damage.

Despite these concerns, the Minister refused to reconsider compulsory licensing and separate regulation of legal e-bicycles.

Successful enforcement deserves praise. Unjustified restrictions demand answers.

Read SCBUG's full meeting report to discover what was said, what questions went unanswered, and why the consequences may extend well beyond cycling.
