SCBUG has now lodged its formal submission to the Department of Transport and Main Roads on The Wave.
The submission argues that The Wave must be planned as a complete transport system, not simply as a rail and metro project. In particular, we are seeking:
safe, direct and continuous walking and cycling access to every station;
a continuous fast cycle corridor from Beerwah to the Sunshine Coast Airport;
secure bicycle storage at every station;
seamless interchange at Birtinya;
bicycle carriage on Stage 3 services; and
genuine consultation and community engagement, with clear responses showing how issues raised have influenced the project.
The submission also makes the case that Safe System principles must apply to the complete journey, including roads, crossings, roundabouts, slip lanes and other conflict points outside the immediate station precinct.
This is a major opportunity to influence transport infrastructure that will shape the Sunshine Coast for decades. SCBUG’s position is that walking, rolling and cycling must be designed in from the beginning, because many of these requirements will be difficult or impossible to retrofit later.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed ideas, local knowledge, photographs, technical information and discussion during the development of the submission.
We will now be seeking a substantive response from TMR and will continue to engage as the project moves through planning and detailed design.
